Graduate work offered by departments in the School of Engineering and Mines lead to the degrees of Master of Engineering with majors in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, and mechanical engineering; Master of Science with majors in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, geology, and mechanical engineering; and a Doctor of Philosophy with majors in engineering and geology. Admission to graduate work in the various departments may be granted to a student upon the recommendation of the Dean of the Graduate School and the chair of the department in which the study will be undertaken. For admission to the Doctor of Philosophy with a major in engineering, the recommendation of the Director of the Engineering Graduate Program Committee is required. The Engineering Combined Degree Program
To encourage undergraduate engineering students to extend their studies to include a graduate degree, the School of Engineering and Mines has a combined program which permits students to earn both BS and MS degrees in an engineering discipline. This program allows students to designate 2 three credit hour courses to count for both degrees. The selected courses must have graduate course standing and must be designated when a student requests admission to the program. The student may only be admitted to the Engineering Combined Degree Program after the completion of 95 credit hours towards the BS degree, and before completion of the BS degree.  The application process for admission to the program requires the submission of a completed Program of Study - Combined Degree form, and it is important to note that this form must be submitted in the first three weeks of a semester for the student to be admitted to the Engineering Combined Degree Program that semester. In addition, the two courses designated for both degrees must not have been completed at the time of application. The student is admitted to the Graduate School on completion of 125 credit hours towards the BS degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students in the program may opt to be awarded their BS and MS degrees sequentially or at the same time. For further information, students should consult their individual academic advisors.

Ph.D. Program
The School of Engineering and Mines has recently expanded its doctoral program, and now offers a PhD in Engineering. This broadened program is a growth from our successful Energy Engineering Doctoral program, which was established in 1992. The new program is based upon the research strengths of faculty, and includes opportunities for studies in the major engineering disciplines of chemical, civil, electrical, geological, and mechanical engineering, and the multi-disciplinary focal areas of energy and environmental engineering. Our program is designed to accommodate students with a B.S. or MS in any engineering discipline. Once a student arrives on campus, we tailor that student's course of study toward their specific interest area.

Our program includes high quality research with substantial interaction between the student and the research advisor(s). We understand that you have made a conscious choice to pursue an advanced degree and we want to make sure that you get the most out of the graduate experience. We will work with you to structure a graduate program consisting of traditional course study, non-traditional studies, and research that will help you to achieve your goals.

We offer financial assistance to nearly all of our students. This includes a monthly stipend and a waiver of tuition.
