Faculty/Administrative Vacancies

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of North Dakota
invites applications for the Ann and Norman Hoffman Professor of National Defense/Energetics. We are anticipating hiring at the Assistant/Associate Professor for a start date of August 15, 2009. This position was created by a recent donation from an illustrious alum, Norman Hoffman, who had a highly successful career in the field of energetics. At UND we strive to achieve excellence as a department in both teaching and research. One of our strengths is the commitment to building a strong rapport between students and faculty. We maintain small class sizes, an open office hours policy, and a commitment by all faculty to helping all students to maximize their potential. We provide an environment that fosters mutual respect and maximizes learning. The department was awarded the 2005 University Award of Excellence in Research and the 2007 University Award for Excellence in Teaching. One of our strengths is extensive departmental and interdepartmental research collaboration.

Applicants for this position should possess B.S. and Ph.D degrees in chemical engineering or a closely related field. Duties will include a blend of teaching and research. A passion for teaching excellence in core chemical engineering undergraduate and graduate courses is necessary. The successful applicant will have the spirit and desire to develop and lead energetics engineering projects and the ability to engage graduate and undergraduate students anxious to acquire, document and study existing valuable energetics data. At the request of the Hoffman’s, one responsibility of this position will be to develop a repository of technical information in the field of energetics. This is a new position, and the applicant will have the flexibility to develop a new program using expertise and resources provided by Mr. Hoffman. Some Departmental service duties will be required.

Grand Forks has been rated as one of the top communities in the nation in which to live and work. Features include excellent schools, affordable housing, and safe neighborhoods. UND’s Chemical Engineering Department is committed to faculty development and maintaining a true balance between teaching and scholarship, and between a career and family. It’s a great place to pursue your career.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled with screening to begin February 1, 2009. Applicants should send an application letter, a resume, a statement of teaching interests (except post-doc position), a statement of research interests (excepting the lecturer position) and the names and addresses of three references to: Faculty Search Committee, Department of Chemical Engineering, Harrington Hall Rm 323, 241 Centennial Drive Stop 7101, Grand Forks, ND 58202-7101. The University of North Dakota, Department of Electrical Engineering (http://www.engineering.und.edu)
invites applications for a Postgraduate Research Associate, with a start date of no earlier than August 16, 2008. Candidates with expertise in all areas of digital signal, image, and video processing will be considered. However, preference will be given to candidates with documented expertise in digital image and video enhancement and reconstruction, since the Postgraduate Research Associate will assist in the development of super-resolution image reconstruction and real-time automatic target recognition and tracking algorithms applied to digital video. The primary goal for this individual is to publish high-quality research results and patent any inventions that may result in marketable intellectual property. A secondary goal is to prepare this individual for an academic career through the leadership of student research and design projects. Descriptions of the University of North Dakota, the School of Engineering & Mines, and the Department of Electrical Engineering are available at the listed URL.

This Postgraduate Research Associate will be involved in a Department of Defense-funded project entitled “Real-Time Super-Resolution ATR of UAV-Based Reconnaissance and Surveillance Imagery,” which will investigate feature-domain super-resolution image reconstruction with model-based constraints as a robust and real-time automatic target recognition (ATR) algorithm for reconnaissance and surveillance imagery captured by airborne sensors flown by Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). The individual will be involved in the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Center of Excellence, an interdisciplinary research center at the University of North Dakota that includes the School of Engineering & Mines, the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, the College of Nursing, and the Department of Psychology.

A Ph.D. or M.S. in electrical engineering or a related graduate degree is required. Both hardware and software research and design skills are highly desirable.
