Engineering education has changed dramatically over the past century, but throughout this period of time the success of UND alumni has continued to reflect the quality of the academic programs in the School of Engineering and Mines. It is important to ensure that students are cognizant of the successes of SEM alumni, and that they recognize the opportunities that are available and the accomplishments that are possible through diligence and dedication. To celebrate the achievements of alumni and to encourage and motivate current students in their academic pursuits, a School of Engineering and Mines Academy was established in Fall 2003. The purpose of the Academy is threefold:
a) to honor the achievements of outstanding alumni
b) to encourage current students to excellence by the example of alumni
c) to create a body to provide advice to the School on major issues
To achieve the first two purposes, each member of the Academy will have a plaque describing his/her career placed in a prominent location in Upson II on the UND campus. A web page will also be dedicated to the Academy, and will contain virtual images of the plaques. The collection of plaques will constitute a record of the history and tradition of the School, and it is hoped that students will aspire to earning their own plaques. With respect to the advisory role, it is envisaged that members of the Academy will provide input on major issues electronically obviating the need for campus meetings.
The SEM Academy will comprise of a small, select group of alumni with members being elected by the five academic departments and inducted annually. The founding class of six to ten members was inducted in Fall 2003, and each year zero to five members will be added. The activities of the Academy will be funded by the School, and administered by a School Committee chaired by the Dean.
